In Chapter Twelve, Uncle Axel confronted David about people suspecting them. There were people in town asking questions about David, Rosalind, Katherine, and Sally. David told Axel about the forest. They deduced that Jerome Skinner had put the word out. Uncle Axel then revealed he had killed Alan. Alan had learned the truth from Anne and planned to expose them for his own profit.

During the night, Petra awoke David on Rosalind’s orders. Sally and Katherine had been taken. Riders were coming for them next. David and Petra hastily packed and snuck out from the farm on a horse as the riders arrived. Sally and Katherine kept everyone informed of their imprisonment. Michael had not been seen by Jerome, as so he was not suspected. He told them to play dumb. David and and Petra rendezvoused with Rosalind in the forest. They felt Sally and Katherine getting tortured. Katherine’s mind disappeared from the network, and Sally said they had broken Katherine. In agony, Sally begged their forgiveness. They succumbed to the torture and revealed David’s getaway route.
