I think conformity and individuality are themes in the book. The novel was inspired by a poster with a T.S. Eliot quote: “Do I dare disturb the universe?” Jerry Renault choses to defy the Vigils and the school administration by continuing to sell chocolates. How long does one stand for individual choice in the face of enforce conformity?
