What is the theme in The Children of Men by P. D. James?

The absence of children is a major theme of this book. The extinction of the human race actually isn't what gets everybody down: it is the absence of children. Without children there are no playgrounds, no laughing, no innocence, no purpose and no hope. This plays havoc on the human psyche.
