Hope or rather lack of hope is a recurring idea in the book. Twenty-five years after the last human was born, people are losing hope that a cure will ever be found. The species is on death row. People are depressed. Life is devalued. People have even lost interest in the simple pleasure of sex. Theo also lives a life without hope. His goal in life is to die at Woolcombe and not leave anything behind.
