How does the author use foreshadowing in The Challenge?

In the beginning of the story, when Leonidas enters the bar and admits that he is dying
of thirst, this briefly foreshadows the story's end. Before long his own son will be dying
with parched lips on the riverbank at the end of the evening's fight with the Gimp.
