Artaud uses sounds, images, and dances, such as the armor-clad men moving slowly "like the figures on the face of the great clock of Strasbourg Cathedral," to enhance the atmosphere of the scene, while at the same time determining its meaning and context. These elaborate and flashy gestures, light, and sound, also serve to overwhelm the audience and shock it out of its preconceptions.
