What does it mean when Phillip ask Timothy "are you still black from the cay"?

Timothy is a black man and Phillip is wondering if he's still black because at the point he asks this, Phillip is blind.

Partially because he has not seen Timothy's face for a few months and partially because he was surprised that a black man could be so compassionate and kind. Remember, Phillip was raised by a somewhat bigoted mother. I apologize for my awful sentence structure.
