why is Mr Spencer so sympathetic in the novel 'the catcher in the rye'

Mr. Spencer is Holden's History teacher and one of the only teaachers (according to Holden) that seems to care if Holden passes or not. Holden visits him at his home right before leaving school and Spencer talks to him about his future. Spencer sees the potential in Holden despite his loses and wants Holden to see it for himself.
