What is the theme in The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger?

The main theme that runs through this book is alienation, no matter what theme is attached to the book. Phoebe sums up Holden's sense of separateness from and anger at other people when she tells him he doesn't like anything. Holden internalizes his negativity until it becomes a large part of his identity.
