Beauty in tragedy is a recurring idea in the book. Victor Serge's book is a tragic depiction of the Stalinist Soviet Union, but Serge manages to bring out the beauty of the characters and of the country even among the atrocities that occur in the story. Humans are complex. No one is completely innocent, just as no one is completely guilty. Victor Serge brings out the good and bad aspects of each of his complex characters.
