Willie Erhardt, Lark's father, is unhappy in his life and marriage. Unfortunately, as he becomes unhappier.... his wife becomes more independent. Willie is strict and controlling when it comes to his daughter, and he attempts to control his wife as well. Papa is a weak man, who lacks the skills to relate to his family in a healthy way. Over the course of the novel, he comes to understand the reasons for his gambling and financial ruin..... he does it because he feels that no one loves and respects him. Papa is like a small child, who behaves in negative ways to get attention.
