Who is Hillyard Stillman (Hilly) from The Cape Ann and what is their importance?

Hillyard Stillman (Hilly) becomes Lark's best friend and has taught her a great deal about life and death. Hilly comes back from the World War with severely limited mental capabilities, yet he teaches Lark much about growing up, expressing and feeling sympathy, and grieving the loss of a loved one.
