The language is contemporary late 20th century. The Cold War is still going on and much of the language is military in nature. Although the book goes from America to Tranquility Inn to Paris and then to Russia, there is little in the way of dialect used in the book. A notable exception is on the Caribbean Island where the natives use occasional local pronunciation like mon for man.
