Control is another theme in the story. Many aspects of this story are a power struggle. Freda is the most obvious character vying for control; control of the working conditions at the factory, control over Brenda, control over Vittorio. Even when she sees that things not going her way, she still exerts her power over those who don't have a voice as strong as hers. As it becomes more apparent that Vittorio may not be romantically interested in her, instead of moving on, she actually pursues him even more actively.
