Self-preservation is a recurring idea throughout the story. For example, Freda's behavior towards Brenda is very harsh and sometimes demeaning. This is clearly because Freda is very afraid to live her life alone, but does not want to show her insecurity. Instead, she does everything possible to make sure that she remains on top and in control of every situation. She actually thinks that she hides her insecurity very well. She is desperate to be a part of a family and a community and says that she will not die alone.
