As stated towards the beginning of the narrative, the story is set towards the end of the 1700s. This is a time of great excitement in fields of science, as many exciting new discoveries are being made. As a devoted scientist, Aylmer seems to view these discoveries as further evidence to the possibility of humanity’s ability to exert control over nature.
