What is the theme in The Beach by Alex Garland?

One major theme in the novel is the way in which people perceive themselves, as opposed to the people they actually are. One exampl of this can be found in the character of Sal, who sees herself as the epitome of a leader. When that leadership is tested, Sal reacts no differently than anyone else on the island.
