The theme in "The Awakening' by Kate Chopin is the main character, Edna Pontellier who is not satisfied with being a woman who has to live by society expectations, instead she finds an awakening when she faces the challenges of the ocean and successfully teaches herself to swim. From this experience on she protrudes an independence and begins to live by her emotions, regardless of the expectations to act differently as demanded by society in her time and age.
