While the early chapters of the first section of The Autobiography are primarily
instructive, the remaining chapters are primarily confessional. Here, the voice is that of the thirty-nine-year-old religious penitent, whose conversion enables him to
metaphorically descend to the very nadir of his existence, as he confesses his sins and riotous living.
