John Stuart Mill was the most influential English language philosophers of the nineteenth century. He was a naturalist and a liberal. His work explored the consequences of a thoroughgoing empiricist outlook. His goal was to combine the best of eighteenth-century Enlightenment thinking with the more modern nineteenth-century Romantic and historical philosophy.
