In Tom Sawyer, what shakes Tom's structure of faith to its foundation?

Tom Sawyer believed in many superstitions. He believed that if you buried a marble and said the correct words over it, then waited a forthnight, that when you unburied it all of the marbles you had ever lost would be there. He did this and it did not work and this shook his faith to its foundations.
