The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

How did the setting of the book affect a choice Tom Sawyer made?

I'm confused about this one as well

One choice Tom made because of the novel's setting was to run away to the island with the pirates. Without access to the river, a way to get across it to the island, Tom and the others might not have run away.
