Self-preservation and self-benefit both fit as a theme in the book. Hand in hand with the rationalizations every character uses to explain his or her actions is the reality that the only real justification is, "It benefits me." The tobacco industry, its powerful lobby, and the government that relies on tobacco money seem to involve self-serving individuals.
