Describe symbolism in Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

The colours red and white frequently come up around Tess. She is associated with sex and passionate love (Red) and purity (White). This is how the men in her life see Tess which causes a great amount of grief for her. It is a patriarchal way of seeing women which they cannot live up to.
