Who is Ged or Sparrowhawk from Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea and what is their importance?

Ged is Archmage of Roke and former student of Ogion. When he first appears in the story we learn that he has lost his powers, and as a result, his identity. Over the course of the novel, he and Tenar become lovers and go onto become a family.
