Sylvester Rinks is the grandson of a former slave who somehow came to own land in Ford County, Mississippi. Cleon Hubbard, Seth’s father, always felt that the land owned by the Rinks should have belonged to the Hubbards. For this reason, Cleon was part of a lynch mob that killed Sylvester. A few days later, Cleon convinced Sylvester’s widow to give him the land and then he ran the Rinks family out of Ford County. This plays a role in Seth’s final will because it appears he discovered that Lettie is the granddaughter of Sylvester Rinks. He wanted to repay her for what his father did.
