In Chapter Four, the game of Chess played by Doc and Joseph and Mary serves as a metaphor for love. Doc explains to Joseph and Mary that there is no way to cheat in chess...... there are rules, and the rules need to be followed. In order to play the game...... both players need to play, and each of the players needs to follow the rules.
