Etics are an important theme. Ethics are defined as a system of moral standards that govern a person or group of people. In this novel, ethics defines the morality of the members of law enforcement, the members of the court system, and the actions of Elvis Cole and his partner, Joe Pike. Elvis lives under the understanding that the cops arrest the bad guys and the court puts them in jail. It is with this understanding that Elvis agrees to help Jonathan Green and his Big Green Defense Machine in the defense of Teddy Martin. Elvis investigates Angela Rossi, the arresting officer in the case, to prove that she did not plant evidence on a previous criminal, therefore implying that she could have planted the murder weapon in the Martin case. Elvis finds Angela Rossi innocent and reports this to Jonathan Green.
