Answers
As a child, Birdy was angry that his uncle wouldn't speak about his experiences in Vietnam. War does not seem very real to Birdy until he encounters it himself. Birdy then goes on to believe he will tell his children something about Iraq, but not too much. He comes to respect his uncle for not wanting to speak about Vietnam in the end.
