When the first boat arrived from Europe to Brazil in 1500, it was an accident. Pedro
Cabral was trying to sail around Africa to get to Asia where he could buy spices for his native Portugal. However, the ocean current brought him to Brazil instead. This was the same current that easily brought slaves across the Atlantic to Brazil. In fact, over the next 400 years, around three million Africans were brought to Brazil as slaves.
