In Chapter Sixteen, Gustad remembers a family vacation from his youth, and the special dessert he was given by the hotel manager. To Gustad, the dessert symbolized the end of vacation, and he had refused to eat it. Later, the bowl became for him a symbol of the bankrupt bookstore.
