Carlyle is an angry, volatile man. On the streets, he coped in a world of "jive" and "soul". The army, however, took him out of his element and placed him in an environment where regimentation and authority threaten, metaphorically speaking, to emasculate him, forcing him to surrender the identity he has provided himself on the streets.
