The stoner farm is a metaphor for the rural way of life. Stoner grows up as a farm boy and his family's farm is basically all he knows. When his father dies—while working the fields—Stoner tries to convince his mom to leave and come live with him but she refuses. He realizes that she just wants to die where she had lived almost all of her life.
