Search for a villain is another theme in the story. Identifying villains in the novel becomes a relative search. The author offers conflicting good and bad qualities, background stories and circumstances for all the villains that it becomes the reader's job to decide who the villains are or if there are any. Cole's dilemma with defining the "bad gu" is introduced early in the story. "You ever notice that sometimes the bad guys are better people than the good guys?" (26)
