Smoke Harvey is an investigative journalist whose uncle, a U.S. senator, was murdered by left wing radicals. Smoke has vowed to bring his uncle's killers - George Gracey and Hannah Schneider/Catherine Baker - to justice. He is killed at a masquerade party that Hannah throws.
