Speak

What is the first thing Melinda gets rid of in her closet? Why? How is replacing this object, with a poster of Maya Angelou, fitting to Melinda's practice of keeping silent?

Melinda, in the novel, Speak, gets rid of a mirror that she's had hanging in her closet. Replacing this object with a poster of Maya Angelou indicates her growing desire for self respect. She doesn't respect herself, but in Maya Angelou, she has found someone to look up to, to use as a role model. This is a postive step in a direction that will eventually take her toward self discovery.
