The majority of the story takes place on Discworld. Discworld is a fantasy land that is described much like our world but with the addition of magic elements. The creatures and people of Discworld don't follow normal rules, but the author has a standard for the norm that is easily learned by the reader. For example wizards conduct themselves very differently from barbarians. Wizards have a place in society to which people expect them to conform. The reader is given the basis for the wizarding world.
