Self absorption is another theme in the story. Darcy's self-absorption leads to shallow behavior as Darcy sees the world only through her eyes of want. As Marcus tries to prevent their first sexual encounter by reminding Darcy of the people they would hurt, Darcy's response is to insist what she wants by removing her underwear. Though Darcy has cheated on Dex repeatedly by the time they break-up, when Darcy finds Dex with Rachel, Darcy becomes the only victimized party in the situation. Darcy maintains being most victimized by Rachel though Darcy did not consider Dex nor Rachel's feelings when she pursued Marcus. Darcy has no regard for breaking up the friendship between Marcus and Dex. She instead belittles their friendship in comparison to her friendship with Rachel.
