After the plague strikes, Dr. Mott's grandchild becomes King of Michigan. He is described as a militaristic young man, but over the course of the story he becomes fat and obscene. After the disintegration of Wilbur's presidency, the King of Michigan has him sign a contract for a large parcel of land.
