In Chapter 16 of Silas Marner, he returns to the village after having been gone for 16 years. He finds that Godfrey is still handsome but definitely putting on weight. Godfrey's wife looks sour and has become bitter with the passing of time. Eppie is beautiful and has become a young woman. The old cottage is not dull and lifeless anymore, but has all sorts of farm animals runnign around. The cottage is clean, warm, and inviting.
