Roland Barthes, 1914-1980, applied semiotics to almost every aspect of French culture and wrote a book called Mythologies that was published n 1957. He used the methodology to analyze cultural significance. He was the first to find political insinuations in many different aspects of culture, basically forms of entertainment.
