A motif can be referred to as determination or the drive for survival. Lindsay is an escaped convict. He survived years in a maximum security prison learning how to handle himself and deal with the different people and the different situations. Lindsay is in good physical shape and can handle himself well. The same is true in the Indian prison. He quickly learned who uses who and how things worked with the help of Muhest. Lindsay knew what the repercussions would be for his actions before he acted, and he made his own choices and accepted the consequences, just as Anand Rao did when he killed Rasheed.
