Secrets are another theme in this story. There are many secrets in Shakespeare's Champion, beginning with the death of Del Packard. The death seems to be an accident at first, though it is revealed that Del is murdered to cover up the fact that several men are conspiring to start a white militia within the town of Shakespeare. Del stumbles across a cache of guns at Winthrop's Sporting Goods and his knowledge causes his death. Lily Bard is determined to find the truth behind Del's death for two reasons. Lily liked Del, an easy-going man, and he was killed at Body Time, the gym where Lily is a member. Body Time is one of the few places where Lily feels safe.
