The artist and the audience are closely interrelated and their relationship is quite complex, according to Tarkovsky. The artist creates works in order to be experienced by others; no artist would create anything if he thought no one would ever bear witness to his work. On the other hand, the artist must not cater to his audience, or create art that he thinks will be enjoyed by the majority of the audience. The artist, first and foremost, must be truthful to himself, to his vision of the world.
