Tarkovsky found Bogomolov's descriptions of landscapes thorough but dry, so he took particular freedom in creating evocative settings. This is in keeping with Tarkovsky's view of cinema as "poetic logic". Tarkovsky drew from a childhood memory for one scene, and other scenes were similarly inspired by dream imagery.
