Elizabeth Kemp is the hypochondriac wife of Mr. Kemp. She does not seem comfortable in her own home where her husband and son both frequently correct her. She is very fond of her sister's son, Matthew Paris, to her son's annoyance. Her character drastically changes when she learns of her husband's death. She no longer is pale and feeble; she strongly takes control of the situation and has a fake death certificate made up so that it seems that her husband died of natural causes. This greatly upsets Erasmus.
