York was an African American slave of William Clark, owned since boyhood. He was born c. 1770 and lived until c. 1832, dying shortly before Jean Baptiste Charbonneau narrates the novel. As a slave, York had no part in deciding whether or not he would participate in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
