Tsar Alexander II Romanov was born 1818. He succeeded Nicholas I in 1855. Alexander legally emancipated the serfs in 1861, although the manner of their emancipation left their condition barely improved. He pushed judicial, tax, military and commercial reforms, as well as railway development. He also granted greater autonomy to Finland and assisted Bulgaria in its liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Alexander was killed by anarchist terrorists.
