Chappie is a rebellious, young teenager, who sports a nose ring, a Mohawk, and abuses marijuana. He is currently enrolled in summer school to avoid failing the eighth grade. His stepfather has been sexually abusing him for years.

Chappie was abandoned by his father when he was five. He blames his father for the abandonment, and that fact that he left him at the mercy of Ken's (stepfather's) sexual perversions. He never tells his mother or any other adult about the sexual abuse.

Chappie's rebellious nature will eventually result in his expulsion from his mother's home and in a long, at times harrowing journey full of sorrow, friendship, criminal behavior, and self discovery.
