Adventure is another theme in the book. Richard, at an early age, dedicates his life to seeking adventure. As he enters the military, his free time is centered on chasing women, bar room brawls and drinking alcohol. There is always an element in the book of doubt about whether Richard is doing something because it is necessary for his mission, or because it is exciting and fun. There is a shift when Richard goes to Officers Candidate. After this, he is forced to concentrate and get his college degree. He learns to study languages such as Vietnamese and French.
